GOLF CHAMPIONS
PROVINCIAL- TITLE TWO QUALIFYING ROUNDS AUSTRALIAN LEADS FIELD FAILURE OF J. P. HORNABROOK The presence among the competitors of the members nf the Now South / Wales Kirk-Windeyer Cup team and the New Zealand nominees for the same event added very materially to the general interest taken in the Auckland provincial vgolf championship, the two qualifying rounds of which were played on the Titirangi Club's links on Saturday. Five Australians participated, but only two qualified. Dobson and C. C. Kuwald. T. H. Horton and B. M. Silk, two of tho Dominion's Kirk-Windeyer Cup nominees, finished in the first sixteen. The third, J. P- Hornabrook, did a moderate roimd in the morning and tore up his afternoon card. The fourth New Zealand nominee, B. V. Wright, of Diuiedin, did not arrive in Auckland until yesterday and he, therefore, will not participate in the championship. Splendid wc.it her prevailed and the course, although fast, was in capital order for play. In spite of the numerous counter attractions, there was a fairly large attendance of the public. Owing to the large entry, it was dark when the last two players finished. Two qualifying rounds of medal play were decided and the score was headed by W. R. Dobson, the New South "Wales Kirk-Windeyer Cup representative. who returned cards of 74 and 78, a total of 152. Dobson fully confirmed his great reputation as a medal player. Players in Championship Three strokes/ behind Dobson came It. F. Edmonds, of the Hamilton Club, and then followed 1. MacEwan, Auckland. Three Kirk-Windeyer Cup representatives were one stroke behind MacKwan, and on tlu? same mark were \V. S. Ralph and B. H. Menzics, both from Middlemore.
