MANY PROTESTS

BRITISH BETTING BILL IRISH SWEEPSTAKE'S FATE LONDON, March 28 The Betting and Lotteries Bill has produced many protests. The National Turf Protection Society regards it as unnecessarily drastic and doubts tho practicability of working mechanical or electric totalisators on a 3 per cent basis. The conditions of the bill are tantamount to a denial of the totalisator to greyhound racing. Tho Greyhound Racing Society has sent a circular to members of Parliament urging that licensing control bo placed in the hands of a national board instead of local authorities. It contends that no greyhound racecourse can creditably be conducted on a basis of two meetings a week. Shares in greyhound racing concerns fell sharply to-da.y in consequence of tho bill. Tho Manchester Guardian states that tho measure is expected to operate from January 1. The directors of the Irish Free State sweepstake are discussing the situation. As something liko 70 per cent of tho subscriptions come from Britain a high authority declares that tho bill possibly < will end tho sweepstake.
