THE WORKING MAN

CLEVER FIRST NOVEL The tale of a working man who achieves sudden opulence only to find that money brings him nothing but artificiality and unhappiness is the theme of " Backwaters," a first novel by William Holt. Joseph Stone, a mill worker, struggles in the midst of his work, and through the medium of books, to find a way out of the social backwaters in which he, and others of his kind, live. Achieving sudden and amazing wealth through the whimsical benevolence of an experimenting chemist, he marries a society* butterfly and lives in a whirl of gaiety and extravagance. Finding, however, that even in this life there is still no release for the soul, puzzled and hurt he returns to his former life at the mill. There are so many " Joseph Stones " in the world that the book will find instant human appeal. It is exceedingly well written, holding out a promise of even better things to come from this author. " Backwaters," by William Holt. (Ivor Nicholson and Watson.)
