NERVOUS EXCITEMENT

AVOIDING HYSTERIA With regard to nervous excitement, it should, of course, bfi obvious that children who suffer from migraine should, on no account be allowed to compete in school for prizes, and this is a factor that should be watched carefully, too, in/those in whom the excitement of school competitions or examinations produces attacks of hysteria. During the paroxsyin the patient should be kept in bed and absolutely quiet, and this should be continued as long as is necessary. If there is a feeling of faintness and nausea, small cup of strong coffee may give relief. Antipyrin and pheiiaCetin have been much used, and when given early—that is to say, at the very outset of the attack —they are sometimes effective. Small repeated doses are more satisfactory, always remembering- that no drug is harmless, £>nd that sedative drugs particularly should be given only under medical attention. Sometimes a prolonged course of bromides is given, and at other times more faith is shown in a tonic treatment with iron and arsenic. This is particularly'valuable if there is anaemia or poorness of the blood, and, as a - matter of fact, this is quite a commonly • found condition if it is looked for with the necessary care. Refreshing Jaded Nerves Often a /change of work will provide a remedy for extreme weariness, so turn from sweeping or cleaning and take up a piece of needlework for 10 or 15 minutes By giving the back muscles a rest/and bringing into action another set ol muscles, you will be surprised how easy it is to overcome your tiredness. Cold water is a fine tonic. Begin by bathing the back of your neck and forehead for a few minutes, then splashing the water over your face, and drying briskly with a rough towel. Afterwards apply a sprinkling of eau de Cologne to tlie forehead and back of the ears. This treatment has a bracing effect and gives infinite relief when one is feeling jaded and overwrought. A sponge-down in hot water, then a quick rinse in cold water ma\ be lollowed by a thorough urushmg ot the hair This is a splendid antidote to tiredness, and at the saine time ones frayed nerves are marvellously soothed.
