ALBANIAN CROWN

OFFER TO BRITON Sir Kobert Graves, tho Briton who is said to liavo refused a kingship, died in his bath in London recently at the age of 76. He was Financial Adviser to the British High Commission in Constantinople for three years after the war, and had. a long diplomatic career of distinction.

His nephew, Charles Graves, writes: " It was about 1905, according to the family story, that he was offered the throne of Albania, then vacant. He declined it. I understand that the British Government instructed him not to accept the position, but I think ho would have declined it even had it been only a question for personal decision. Albania is not, .or was not then, a place of alluring prospect. ' " There was no money, or very little, attached to the job, his homo would have been a lonely little castle in some mountain fastness, and there was always an element of risk attached to the throne. I believe the position was eventually filled by Prince Wilhelm of Wied, the predecessor of the present ruler. King Zog."
