PORT OF AUCKLAND

PREMIER POSITION HELD RETURNS FOR LAST YEAR The claim of Auckland to the honour of being the premier port of the Dominion, which was referred to by the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. T. B. Clay, at a meeting of the board this week, is fully justified by the Government Statistician's figures for the period from January 1. 1933. to December 31. This is contrary to an impression which lias been gained by people in other parts of New Zealand, who believe that this position is held by Wellington. Imports at Auckland during the year amounted to £7,527,411. or 35 jier cent of the Dominion total, £21.451.382. The value of imports into Wellington in the same period totalled £7,133,214, or 33 per cent of the total for New Zealand.

In exports from the Dominion the figures show that Auckland led by even a greater margin, the percentage of the total being 32, ns against "Wellington's 23 per cent. Auckland exported goods of a value of £13.439,37(3 and Wellington goods valued at £9.816.792, the total for New Zealand being £41,301.951.

As far as the quantity of goods both imported and exported is concerned, the figure given for Auckland is 1,489,909 tons, or 26 per cent of the total of 5,669.744 tons, and that for Wellington, 1.474.077 tons, which is 25.9 per cent of the total.
