FIERCE TORNADO TOLL IN NEW ORLEANS ENORMOUS DAMAGE NUMEROUS CASUALTIES TEKKOE OF THE PEOPLE By Telesraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received March 27. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 26 A message from New Orleans, Louisiana, states that a tornado struck the down town section of that city to-day and about 100 buildings in an area one mile long and several hundred feet wide were destroyed or damaged. Twelve people were injured and sent to hospital. Scores of others received minor injuries. Seven hundred people were rendered homeless and the damage to propertv is estimated at many thousands of dollars. Torrential rains accompanied the wind and semi-darkness added to the terror of the people. Many residents in the French quarter of the city stood on the porches of their homes burning holy candles and uttering prayers of thanksgiving that they had escaped with their lives.
