Twelve people were injured and sent to hospital. Scores of others received minor injuries. Seven hundred people were rendered homeless and the damage to propertv is estimated at many thousands of dollars. Torrential rains accompanied the wind and semi-darkness added to the terror of the people. Many residents in the French quarter of the city stood on the porches of their homes burning holy candles and uttering prayers of thanksgiving that they had escaped with their lives.
