KAMO TABLET PORTER
PROTEST AGAINST REMOVAL MANAGER'S EXPLANATION [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday As a result of the removal of the railway talbet jiorter from Kamo to Ruatangata a protest has been made by the Kamo Town Board. A petition against the change has also been signed by the local stock firms. The latter contend that the diversion of stock traffic from Kamo to Ruatangata would endanger public safety.
The general manager of the New Zealand Railways has replied stating in effect that the department had no intention of closing the Kamo station for traffic and passengers would not be affected to any great extent by the withdrawal of the porter. The alteration, ho stated, had been made for the purpose of giving valuable assistance to the department's clients in dealing with goods and stock traffic, which was considerable, and, incidentally, much greater than .that handled at Kamo. it was also proposed to withdraw the tablet porter at Kauri and it was believed that considerable economy and improved train facilities would result. Under all the circumstances, the Railway Department was of the opinion that the changes would be helpful rather than detrimental.
