RIVER THAMES
PASSENGER TRANSPORT "TAXI" SERVICE ORGANISED (Received March 23, 6.15 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, March 22 The Minister of Transport, Mr. Oliver Stanley, has appointed a committee to inquire into the possibilities of the River Thames for passenger transport services. . . ■ The first "taxi" to ply up and down the Thames has been launched, and the services will start soon. The boat is called the London River. It is designed to carry 100 passengers, and is fitted with a cocktail bar. The flat expanse of the upper deck can, if desired, be used for dancing. The boat will cruise at 18 knots, driven by two 100 horse-power engines. The service, which is to be run from Putnej' to Greenwich at sixpence a passenger,, is to be operated by a private company. The company is building its own landing stages, and is to have work begun on two more boats almost immediately. with the object of haviDg a five-minute service. In a time of national emergency the London River could be used as a patrol boat, for she carries a gun platform and two 18in. torpedo tubes, and has facilities for depth eharg» chutes.
