RIVER DREDGE DAMAGED

EXPLOSIVE SMASHES BUCKET [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON.' Tuesday The work of dredging a portioii of tbs lower reaches of the Maugauara River, near Taupiri, is being delayed owing to an unusual accident whicii occurred to the plant. A drag-line dredge employed by a firm of contractors struck a heavy kahikatea log. sft. in diameter ar.d lilt. long. The log was too big for the bucket to grip and too heavy for the dredge to lift. Five pounds of gelignite were used to break up the log. Through a misadventure the charge did not break the log, but smashed the bucket of the dredge,-, aud caused damage to the extent of £l5O. The work of dredging the river in the section where the dredge is engaged will be held up for some weeks until the bucket can be replaced.
