VETERANS ON ANZAC DAY

CHEAP FARES REFUSED A request that returned soldiers proceeding to the Anzac Day parade should be allowed to travel on the trams for a fare of one penny was declined by the Auckland Transport Board yesterday. In making the request, the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association said the board had decided to allow territorials in uniform attending parades to travel for one penny, and a similar concession for one day to returned soldiers would be appreciated. It was decided to inform the association that it was under a misapprehension, as the difference between the fare of one penny charged to territorials and the charge for the distance by ordinary concession tickets was made up by a direct subsidy from the Defence Department.
