A NURSE ABROAD
NEW ZEALAND SYSTEM [from OUJI OWN correspondent] LONDON, Feb. 2 Miss Edith Lewis, superintendent of the Marlborough Hospital Board, was a guest at luncheon of the Leicester National Council of Women, and later spoke on New Zealand and on nursing in that country. The meeting was one of the largest and most representative that the Leicester National Council of Women has yet held. The speaker was introduced by the president, Mrs. Russell Frears, and the Lady Mayoress (Mrs. Billings) thanked her on behalf ol' the audience for her address. Among numerous other well-known people there were the Deputy Lady Mayoress (Mrs. Hawkes), Lady Oliver and Councillor Miss Frisby. A local correspondent who was present writes: " One gathered from Miss Lewis that nurses in New Zealand not only need to bo highly qualified, as the system under which they work often entails considerable responsibility, but they require a good deal of initiative. This last quality would certainly seem to be shown by a Blenheim hospital sister, mentioned by Miss Lewis, who has taken out her A certificate an an air pilot, so that she may fly home across the neighbouring straits during her hours off duty. Cooking forms an important part of the New Zealand nurse's training." Thds love of England by the New Zealanders was emphasised by tho speaker. She said she was a native of Northampton and during her 25 years in tho Dominion had returned homo only four times. " But in New Zealand," she added, u wo all love a trip to tho Motherland."
