CARS IN COLLISION
CHARGE OF NEGLIGENCE FINE ON ONE DRIVER [from our own* correspondent"] PUKEKOHE, Wednesday As a result of a " motor collision at Paerata on the night of December 21, the driver of one of the cars, W. Claiud Motion, of Waiuku, was charged in the Police Court to-day before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., with negligent driving and failing to keep to the left of the centre line.
Constable Murray said the two cars collided on a perfectly straight piece of road.
Miss M. R. Jamieson, driver of the other car, said she saw defendant's car aproaching when she was travelling on her correct side of the road, hugging the grass. The other car came straight at her car and the two collided.
A passenger in the car, Sidney Wallingford, flight lieutenant in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, gave similar evidence.
For the defence, Mr. Grierson explained that no negligence was alleged on Miss Jamieson's part. Defendant's car had been travelling on the crown of the road, and when leaving it itiad gone into a skid. The steering wheel had been torn from defendant's hand, injuring it.. . Defendant said that he had been driving a car for over 20 years, including experience in London traffic, and this was his first accident of any kind. < "It seems to be a clear case of a man holding the centre of the road when, he ought to have gone to the left," said Mr. Levien. A fine of £2 10s and costs was imposed on the negligent driving charge, and the other charge was withdrawn.
