MYSTERY AEROPLANE
UNIDENTIFIED STEAMER SUPPOSED SHELL POACHERS NEW GUINEA COMPLAINT (Received March 5, 5.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. March 5 A message from Rabaul, New Guinea, states that Mr. William Baker, a planter in the islands 200 miles west of Rabaul, reports that a mystery aeroplane was sigbj-ed over Witu, also an unidentified steamer, which entered unfrequented harbours. It is supposed that the vessel is the mother ship for shell poachers, and that observers in the aeroplane search for promising reefs. The planters are dependent upon shell fishing owing to the collapse of the rubber market, and they complain that poachers are denuding the best reefs.
