TREMOR GENERALLY FELT
NO ILL-EFFECTS REPORTED
RESIDENTS AWAKENED
It is Boldom that earthquakes are felt in Auckland, but last night's shockwas reported from two places, the Harbour Board office on Queen's Wharf and at Remuera.
The board's oflieial said that the wharf appeared to roll in the same manner as when the disastrous earthquake occurred in Hawke's Bay in February, 1931. He had made inquiries, but no one else on tho wharves had felt the shocks.
A Remuera resident was sufficiently disturbed by the severity of tin? shake to ring the Herald office for information as to whether the earthquake had been, reported from other centres.
The clock on the Ferry Buildings stopped at 11.50. The Public Works Department at Auckland received communication from Arapuni and surrounding districts stating that the shako was felt as severely as that of the Napier earthquake. No damage at the dam is reported, but a thorough examination is :uot jpossiblo until daylight.
Rotorua was able to give a. report concerning Taupo and the Bay of Plenty. The shock was felt only (slightly in Rotorua, but Taupo felt two shakes and there was a similar experience in all the Bay of Plenty towns. The Herald's Hamilton correspondent reported that the second of the two shocks appeared to ibe the more severe. Houses creaked and electric lights commenced to swing and there was a very eerie feeling for a few minutes. The direction of the shocks appeared to be from oast to west.
From Te Kuiti the report was that the "shocks -were sufficiently severe to awaken sleeping residents. No damage was reported. At Taumarunui tlie earthquake did not appear to bo as severe as that which was felt at the time of the Napier disaster. People rushed out into the streets. At Ohura, the passengers on the express from New Plymouth, which svas standing at the station, felt the shock.
