ALEXANDER CLEAN-UP Alexander Mines, Limited (Reefton), reports tho folllowing results for the February clean-up, January figures being given in parentheses:—Ore crushed, 245 tons (358); melted gold, 190oz. 7d\vt. (189oz. lldwt.); cyanide treatment, 249 tons (209) sand; bullion, 540z. 3dwt. (430z. 14dwt.); estimated value at £6 an ounce, £145(3 (£1380). In addition, concentrates valued at £2lB (£217) were saved. OTHER COMPANIES' YIELDS Okarito (South Westland). —Last week, 460z. for 117 hours. Gillespie's Beach (South Westland). —Last week, 58oz. 14dwt. for UQi hours. Brian Boru (near Greymouth).—Last week, 84oz. lOdwt. for 122 hours. Bell-Hooper (Cromwell). —Last week, 68oz.
STAFFORD AREA CLAIMS A report from Hokitika states that mining projects in tho Stafford district, which have been in view for some time, are now being completed, and operations will he in hand shortly. Preparatory work will bo put in hand shortly by Stafford Gold Dredging, No Liability, Melbourne. This will be one of the largest; undertakings of its kind on the West Coast. Mitchell's larce sluicing claim is expected to be in working order shortly and the Wheel of Fortune claim is also to have early attention.
AUSTRALIAN FIRM'S OPTION Gold Dredging Option N.L., Melbourne, reports that the company's expert, after investigation, does not recommend proceeding; further with the option over tho Mataiki River area. The company has taken an option over a' gold-bearing area near Greymouth. Test boring has been commenced. THE GOLDFIELDS DREDGE The Goldlields Dredging Company. Limited, reports that the dredge ceased operations on Monday, February 19. for the refitting of a new tumbler shell which recently arrived from England, and that good progress has been made with this work. It is anticipated that dredging in the, Shotover River will bo recommenced within tho next few days, but that payable ground will not be encountered until tho dredge enters tho main gorge leading to Big Beach. NEVIS SLUICING CLAIMS, LTD. Sufficient shares having been applied for, the Nevis Sluicing Claims Company, Limited, has now proceeded to allotment. Mr. J. A. Johnston, the claim manager, is at present in Dunedin,, arid immediate steps are being taken to proceed with the development of the claim and the enlargement of th« water-race in accordance with tho directors' proposals. AUSTRALIAN PRICE OF GOLD The price fixed by the Commonwealth Bank for gold, including jewellery, lodged at the Melbourne Mint, for the week ended February 23, was at the rate of approximately £7 14s 4d a standard ounce <£s2 carats), equal to a premium of 98.21 per cent. Payment is made according to the assay value of the gold. The prico was 2s 2d higher on tihe week. The price an <suuce fine was £8 8s fid, a riise of 2s 3d on the week".
REPORTS OF MANAGERS The Down of Hope (Thames).—Rising on the flat leader over the rise was continued Lust week. The prospects continue to.be favourable and at each breaking down the ore, which is 12in, in width, shows colours and dabs of gold. Owing to the air being lieht in this part of the mine we have decided to <lrive through the tributers' block. The distance to drive through the above block into the company's ground ia and we consider our prospects most favourable in carrying out this new- development. ' i .
