PUNISHMENT FOR SPEEDING HEAVY TRAFFIC BREACHES A warning that the Court would_ have to take a' more serious view of speeding through townships and would not in future accopt certain excuses for failing to comply with the heavy traffic licence regulations was given by Mr. F. H. Lovien, S.M., in the Otahuliu Police Court yesterday. After hearing a number of cases of dangerous driving through the Otahuhu, Westfield and Papatoetoo districts, Mr. Lovien said that, if motorists continued to travel at 39 miles an hour through townships, he would have to increase the fines substantially. . Travelling through a township like Otahuhu at a speed exceeding 25 miles an hour shows no respect for any fiorson's safety," Mr. Lovien added. AVhen counsel for a carrying firm said tho heavy traffic licence fees had been deposited in tho local' body's office, but that no licence could bo issued until tho department re-opened _ after tho holidays, the magistrate said he would not accept thai; excuse m future. "It is tho duty of operators to sec that licences are obtained before going on the road, and I am not concerned with the vagaries of offico hours. The onus is on the operator," said the magistrate.
