LOAN SCHEME DROPPED

DECISION AT ONEHUNGA STANDARD PAY REQUIRED Owing to a ruling given by the officer in charge of the Labour Department, Auckland, Mr. W. Slaughter, that certain proposed works in the Onehunga borough demanded standard rates of pay, the borough council last evening decided to proceed no further with its loan proposals. schedule of works submitted to Mr: Slaughter included the construction of a swimming bath on the Manukau foreshore, the concreting and tar sealing of several roads, and the formation of concrete footpaths. The amount of the proposed loan, £llOO. was estimated to cover the cost of material only, and ita was anticipated that tho various works would be done by relief labour under the No. 5 scheme.

Mr. Slaughter, however, pointed out by letter that the new works in the loan proposals were standard works and necessary for the normal development of the borough. Before forwilrding the proposals to the Unemployment Board it would be necessary for tho council to agree to engage men for full time at standard rates. Ho added that on the council signifying its decision to pay standard wages, the question of a subsidy would be considered. As the payment of standard wages would greatly increase the amount of the loan it was decided to take no further action.
