RIFLE SHOOTING
DIXON'S BRILLIANT SCORE COMPETITORS AT TRENTHAM Championship shooting was resumed at Penrose on Saturday under tricky conditions, both light and wind beina sufficiently variable to cause trouble. City Club fired a service series at dOO and 200 3 r ards. but the scores were not up to standard, several of the leading marksmen failing badly. C. J- M. Clark won by a fair margin and should be prominent at the Trentham meeting next month. F. Bowes shot solidly for second place, his performance showing that he is definitely on the up-grade in this class of shooting;. With another season's experience he will reach the top class. 11. C. Russell was four points below Bowes after changing rifles dur-r ing the shoot and must be considered for the A service team. Had he put in more practice he would have been certain of a place. P. J. Pring. a former club champion, also shot solidly, but H. Simmonds and G. G. Kelly failed to shoot anywhere near their best form.
Akarana shot at the long ranges and in spite of adverse conditions registered some fine scores. A. H. Pixou scored an overdue win with 92, including 5, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5. 5, 5, 5 at 900 yards. Thu; was a brilliant effort, and as good am anything seen at Penrose for a long time. W. Powell was next with 91. his scores including a magpie at each ranee. His finishing efforts were excellent and he was unlucky in striking Dixon at the top of his form. R, Wakefield was unfortunate in registering a magpie at 800 yards with his last shot, after being only one point down in nine, while E. J. Reston, who bad 5. 4, 5, 5, 5, '>, 5, 5, 5, 5 —49 to his credit at the same range, was forced to retire at 900 yards owing to heavy rain. Both should give a good account of themselves at Trentham. A. G. Devore. who is a brilliant shot in a meeting, made an indifferent score, an occurrence which is not unusual for him in club competition. Country clnba will be well represented at Trent-ham, the Auckland provincial quota being bigger than for some years past. J. H. Ash ton, D. Wilton and X. O. Shepherd will shoot for Whangarej, and possibly Norris will make up a full team. H. A. Oliver and J. C. Kiddie will represent Taurauga and J. D. Love fOmana), G. Faulkner (Katikati), Bob Wilson (Bangitaiki) and J. S. Fleming (Matamata) also intend to make the trip. Most of these men are B graders and have had sufficient experience to make a good showing. Additions to the Auckland contingent will be S. A. S. Elliott and A. Jenkinson, of Akarana, and S. Parkinson and possibly A, G. Degenkolbe, of City,
