EXPORTS AND IMPORTS
Sir, —An entirely new light is thrown upon our trade relations with foreign countries by the revelation that over £-4,000,000 worth of our exports are shown in the official figures as exports to Great Britain, though in reality the commodities are shipped to London merely for transhipment to foreigu countries. Presumably if the foreign steamers called at New Zealand these exports would be shipped to European countries direct, and there would thou be no confusion in the statistics. When this £4,000,000 exports to foreign countries, via London, is added to the £2,500,000 exported to foreign countries direct, we find that our exports to foreign countries practically balance our imports from them. I think many people will agree with me in regarding this as a most striking fact, and a fact which is not usually recognised. T.A.H.
