ICE-BREAKER SINKS
DISASTER IN THE ARCTIC 94 PEOPLE MAROONED (Received February 15, 11.55 p.m.) MOSCOW. Feb. 14 Captain Schmidt has wirelessed that the Soviet ice-breaker Chelyuskin, which had been marooned in the ice for months near Wrangel Island, after a stormy voyage, sank in the Okhotsk Sea, after having been frequently caught in heavy ice-blocks, which tore the port side, burst the steam pipes and immobilised the pumps. The 94 people on board, including women and children, calmly unloaded the emergency supplies, tents and sleeping bags. An airman wirelessed before the vessel disappeared that a beam crushed one sailor, who was drowned. The castaways are now marooned on the icefields, but their rescue is expected by air and dog sleighs.
As they are within the Arctic circle ; the marooned people are practically in f darkness. All are hopeful, however, and j it is believed they have provisions j adequate for their immediate needs.
