Hutchison, at a meeting of the City Council last evening to Mr. Leslie Martin, an employee of the Devonport Ferry Company, who has the record of having rescued 12 people from drowning in the Auckland Harbour, and one at Kerikeri. The particular incident for which the certificate was awarded occurred ou December 28, 1932, when a young boy, a visitor from Wanganui, fell overboard from the ferry Peregrine, of which Mr. Martin was mate. Mr. Martin jumped into the water, fully clothed, and swam 300 yards to where the lad was in serious difficulties. As a result of Mr. Martin's efforts, the boy escaped without any ill effects. "1 thank you on behalf of the citizens of Auckland for the bravery you displayed," said Mr. Hutchison, in making the presentation. "I hope you will continue to cultivate your hobby of saving lives. This is an award any of us would be proud to have won." Members of the council applauded Mr. Martin as he received the certificate.
