FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of February 16, 1884: Auckland has now attained the proud position of being at the top of the tree as far as cricket is concerned, and if she desires to retain that honour our players must be provided with proper facilities. Dunedin and Christchurch are fat ahead of us in the matter of grounds. The Domain will never be suitable, and the sooner the leasing project is abandoned the better. A good ground means good cricket." A telegram from Cambridge states that a party of men, accompanied bv Mr. Green, the sheriff, destroyed the whares on the Puahoe block. The natives offered no resistance, but when the whares were destroyed they>- reerected makeshift huts. The Tauranga cheese factory was opened recently in the presence of a large number of visitors. The plant is very complete, and it took the first prize at the last agricultural show in Auckland. The company should prove a successful venture.
