PUBLIC GOLF COURSE

CONSTRUCTION AT ORAKEI

GOCiD PROGRESS WITH WORK

Good progress has been made with the preparation of the IS-holes public golf oourso at Ornkei,- and it will probes ably bo ready lor play early in April. ' Altliough Auckland is well known for tho excellence and diversity of its golf courses, tho Orakoi links will bo tlio first to be operated on the "pay as you play" system, which has met with great popularity in other centres.' • Tho course covers an area of 105 acres on tho rolling Orakoi plateau over!ooking""l > oint Hastion and Mission Hay, and commanding extensive and delightful views. The lay-out by the professionals, Messrs. A. J. Shaw and F. J. Kutter, has taken full advantage of tho nature of the undulating country to ensure that each holo will be of interest, without presenting undue difficulties. A considerable amount of banking has been carried out, but there are comparatively few bunkers. The full length of tho course is approximately 5-OOyds. The longest hole, No. 2, is <1 iGyds.. and the shortest," No. . N, about 129 yds. The lay-out places tho first and tenth tees near -the clubhouse, so as to afford two starting points. The property is well turfed with tho requisite EngHsh grasses and a,gang of eight men has been engaged for several months in bringing the fairways and greens into good i>rder. Cabbage palms grow extensively on the plateau, and, on some of tho fairways form almost an. avenue. ' Work is being commenced this week on the construction of an up-to-date clubhouse on tho Orakei side of the property. An interesting feature of the course Is that from tho clubhouse no fewer than seven holes will be visible, while from another point 12 holes will be in full view..
