ELDERLY MAN ARRESTED

FOUND IN AVONDALE GARDEN "I was just having a rest as I had tramped through from St. Ilpliers Bay to Avondale on my way to a job at Swanson," said William Henry Mundey, aged G4, labourer, who appeared in the Police Court on Saturday on a charge of having been found without lawful excuse on enclosed premises in St. George's Road, Avondale, on February 1. He was also charged with being a rogue and vagabond, having insufficient, means of support and having been previously convicted of being idle and disorderly.

Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that accused had had several previous convictions for similar offences, but thcro" was no great harm in the man. Mundey, in pleading not guilty, embarked on a long and wordy explanation of his troubles. "All I wanted was a drink of water and something to eat., ho said. "I was given these, and I just sat down under some trees in a garden for a little rest." In reply to a question from tlio magistrate, Mr. W. It. Me.Kcan, he said he had not tried to get into a relief camp as he preferred working on his own account. On his statement that he had assured work to go to, ho was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on the first charge when called upon within 12 months. The second chargo was dismissed.
