EDUCATION AFFAIRS

THE AUCKLAND BOARD

KOWHAI SCHOOL - COURSES RICHMOND ROAD BUILDING Advice was received from the Education Department at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday that it had approved of third year courses being provided at Kowliai Intermediate School for those pupils whose parents have signed an undertaking that they do not intend to send their children to a secondary school or a technical school.

The department also advised that an increase had been made in the grant for the maintenance of school buildings during the current financial year. The chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, said that the additional sum amounted to £2690, and this would be sufficient to enable urgent repair and maintenance work to be carried out.

The Ponsonby School Committee wrote repeating its request that the Richmond Road school be replaced. Mr. R. A. Hew said that the roll was steadily growing, and the school was the centre of a large district that urgently required a modern, wellequipped school. Members agreed that the building needed replacing, and it was resolved that £IOOO bo offered to the Education Department from the board's reserve funds toward a new building if the department would undertake the work. A letter was received from the Auckland University College Council regarding tlu: proposal to employ Mr. HHollinrake. lecturer in music at the Auckland Training College, for one day a fortnight at the University College while the Training College was closed. The letter stated that the council had approached the Education Department with a request that Mr. Hollinrake be located in Auckland during the present year instead of acting as itinerant instructor in music throughout the province, and that two days a week be allotted to the University College 011 condition that two-fifths of his salary be paid by that institution. The chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, said that the retirement of Dr. YV. E. Thomas from the chair of music had left the college in the position of having to provide for a number of pupils who had undertaken courses in music, and it was not in a financial position to engage a new professor. It was decided to support the council's proposal.

A letter was received from the committee of the Katui school, near Dargaville, resigning as a protest against the board's by-law against Sunday play on school grounds. It was decided to accept the resignation and to appoint a commissioner for the school. The • chairman reported that the board was in no way responsible for the delay in completing the schools at Bassett's Block and Wilson's Settlement, near Dargaville, regarding which complaints had appeared. The building at Bassett's Block would be completed in time for occupation at the beginning of the new school year, and arrangements had been made for the use of another building until that at Wilson's Settlement was finished.
