GOLD EXPORT DUTY

REQUEST FOR REMOVAL AUSTRALIAN DEPUTATION [bt telegraph—own correspondent} WELLINGTON, Wednesday The fact that the higher exchange more than offset the gold export duty was pointed out by the Minister of Mines, Hon. C. E. Macmillan, in replying to a deputation representing Australian financial interests which are prepared to invest in gold mining in New Zealand. The deputation had sought the removal of the duty. The deputation was a. private one. Although Mr. Macmillan promised to place its representations before Cabinet it is understood ~he informed the deputation that the exchange was raised for the benefit of the class in the community that had suffered by the drop in the world's prices of commodities and that gold, so ■- far from having dropped, had appreciated in value. It had Deen considered reasonable that the gold industry should contribute something in consideration of the benefits given.
