WELLINGTON MEETING

LITTLE WORK YESTERDAY

KING'S KNAVE LOOKS WELL

SEVERAL MORE ARRIVALS [bv tki, kgraph OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday This morning was an off one at TrenIham, and there was very little activity beyond the ordinary routine of pace work. Forestry and Epigram each did a couple of rounds of pace work, Forestry running home the last seven furlongs with Zetes in 1.37. King March, King's Knave and Red Sun worked similarly. Othe'r visitors to put in an appearance were Kemnl Pasha, Mobile, Ventrnc, Dismiss, Lord Val, High Grader and Silver Beam. Vertigern arrived later in the day. King's Knave impressed track watchers yesterday by his condition and appearance. Impasto is also looking very well. Impasto was a good two-year-old, but between seasons he was gelded and, as he did not do well afterwards, was given a let-up. He raced again at Waipa last month, to run second to Jonathan. At Auckland ho was unplaced in two races, but he did not run badly, and showed an improvement at his last start. He gives the impression that ho is coming back to form. W. J B roughton, who rode Grand Jury on the concluding day of the Manawgiu Summer Meeting, will have the mount on the Grand Court gelding in the Wellington Cup. a The Admyra gelding in tho Ruapehu Hack Handicap on the opening day of the Wellington meeting has been named Alcides.

Up to tho Manawatu Cup, Tiger Gain was trained at Waipukurau by his owner, Mr. P. Madsou, but he will appear at Trentham trained by C. S. Pilcher, of Feilding. There will be several horses bracketed in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Mr. Kemball has three engaged, Wahroonga, Capital and Willwyn; Mr. A. F. Symes two, Bodylino and Flaxen; Mr. E. V. [FROM OUR own- correspondent]

NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday

There was considerable activity on the New Plymouth track this morning, when all the horses with engagements at Trentham and Ashhurst were worked.

Refresher and Silk Sox separately did 6teady pace work on the plough. Yesterday morning they galloped six furlongs on the outside of the course proper, both acquitting themselves well. Refresher looks particularly bright and well and should race prominently at Trentham. Leo Colossus shaped attractively over five furlongs 011 the outside of the course proper, running the distance in 1.5. On the same track _ Headmistress and Prince Colossus took 1.35 for seven furlongs, They moved evenly all the way, but Prince Colossus was- inclined to loaf at the finish. He will be ridden by .his trainer, H. Dulieu, in the' Trentham Highlweight Handicap on Saturday. Desert Star (H. Goldfinch) strode over six furlongs in good style in I.IUJ. He looks very well anji moved lreely. So far no rider has been engaged for him in the Wellington Cup. After breakfast Lalla Quex galloped seven furlongs in 1.31 '2-5 on the plough. This track was fast, but nevertheless the mare did her task well and is evidently on the improve. She will contest the Hack Cup at Ashhurst next Monday Aussie Ra and an unnamed Potoa mare in R. Barlow's stable dashed over two furlongs on the plough in '25 3-ss, both hitting out. freely.

With the assistance of Adept over the last five, Arvada galloped seven furlongs on the same track iu I.3'ii. She finished resolutely and has evidently benefited as a result of her racing during the holidays. Adept was eased up after going half a mi If. Superior (H GoldfincJij went ouce raund at an easy pace and ran dowij the straight. She has thrown off her soreness,' but has not yet entirely shaken off the uttects of her cold.

Royal Acre, who has joined H. Dulieu's team, did solid pace work on the plough. He has evidently done plenty of work on his owner's farm and will probably race at the Tarunaki meeting next month. Lady Kyra hopped iff ahead of Jacana and beat him home by a couple of lengths in 37 4*-ss. Lady Kyra shaped attractively, while Jacana who is an n«ed half-brother, by Potoa, to Stork, also displayed a good turn of speed. R. Barlow, with Refresher and bilk Sox. and H. Dulieu. with Desert Star and Prince Colossus, will go to Trentham by train on Thursday morning.

TURF IN AUSTRALIA SILVER SCORN REAPPEARS (Received January 17, 9.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 17 At the Victoria' Park races to-day Silver Scorn reappeared alter a spell since the Hiring and ran in the Flying Handicap, 'i'ho tiorse finished fourth. DUAL CUP WINNERS AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON The task in front of Minerval of following up an Auckland win with success also in the Wellington Cup a month later has an ample backing of precedent. Four horses have previously accomplished the feat, and five others have won the two races in different seasons. The quartet to have succeeded in the same season are Lava (1877-78), Nelson (1885-86), St. Michael (1901-02), and Concentrate (1929-30). Nelson's victory at Hutt Park followed the first of his three successive wins in the Auckland Clip. Concentrate is the only dual victor in the one season Binco the Wellington Cup was run at Trcntham. Horses to have won the Auckland Cup in the samo year, or but a season later than tiie Wellington Cup, have been Foul Flay (1880), The Poet (1884), Sir Solo (1913), and .Rapier (1927). Rapine won the Wellington Cup as a three-year-old in 1923 and the Auckland Cup as u six-year-old in 1925. It may be worth noting also, in connection with the task before Tiger Gain, that a Manawatu Cup winner has gone on to win at Trenthain three times. The horses so successful were Sir Solo (1912-13), Kilrain (1913-14), and Nobleman (1917-18). Forestry's task of an immediately precedent Wairarapa Cup win lias been accomplished only by Moloch (1908), but 'Red Ribbon was successful at Trcntham a year after winning nt Taulierenikau, and Stanchion -won at Trcntham after scoring on the second day at Taulierenikau.
