PAPATOETOE AFFAIRS
SATISFACTORY FINANCES LOWER TRAIN FARES SOUGHT Satisfaction with the financial position of the Papatoetoe Town Board was expressed at a meeting of the board on Tuesday evening. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, said that during the holiday period, when it was generally recognised that revenue was at its lowest ebb, the board had received sufficient payments to enable it to reduce its overdraft slightly. He reported that the overdraft was now approximately £2BOO. This was considered to bo a satisfactory position at this time of the year. A report on further efforts to obtain railway fare concessions was made by Mr. E. H. Burton. He said he had interviewed department officials regarding the board's claim for a reduced fare for those travellers who did not benefit under workers' concession tickets. It had been urged upon the department that a weekly ticket at 5s would increase the traffic by rail. Mr. Burton said he had submitted a statement of . all the facts and the department had promised consideration. The chairman said it was desirable, in the board's view, that some concession should be made. He hoped the department would recognise that the suggestion was in its interests.
