QUARRY TO GARDEN

PROPERTY TRANSFORMED

LARGE TERRACED ROCKERY

REMUERA ROAD FRONTAGE

The transformation of an unsightly abandoned quarry into a fine terraced rock garden is nearitig completion in the grounds of a residence on the northern slope of Mount Hobson, facing Rcmuera Road. A great deal of work done in the past year under the direction of the owner has effected a striking improvement in the appearance of the property, and tho general result when the laying out of belts of flowers and shrubs has been completed promises to be particularly effective. Even in an unfinished state, the work done has given the property the appearance of an amphitheatre. A bluestone wall faces Remuera Road, with a garage under construction in the centre. On the bed of the old quarry raised and levelled, a hard tennis court if? taking shape. Blue metal is also used for two paths which run from tho road level round the top of the former quarry. The steep sides of the old pit are ornamented with two rock turrets, while it is planned to construct a pergola near by. Behind the tennis court, and on a higher level, a putting green is being laid out. Immediately behind, the rockery proper commences. Already there is a profusion of flowers on the succeeding terraces, their brilliant colours standing out in striking relief against a background of grass and the red scoria used for the ornamental stone formations.

Banks of geraniums, begonias, petunias and French marigolds are beginning to break the formality of the extensive stone works, while rustic fences will later be set in appropriate positions. An unexpected lily-pond high above the terraces further enhances the appearance of the property.
