NEW WHARF PROJECT

BERTHS FOR OIL TANKERS WORK TO START AT LYTTELTON *"• . 1 The Lyttelton Harbour Board's works stall will shortly commence work on the new wharf for oil-tankers, which will cost £35,000, and provide berthage for the largest typo of tankers. The present wharf used for tankers was built to accommodate the dredge Canterbury during the filling-in of the present reclamation area, and, when the first oil tanks were built some years ago, the wharf was adapted for berthing tankers. The present wharf is 400 ft. long, and the new wharf will bo 664 ft. long. As the tankers handle no cargo except bulk motor spirits, which is pumped direct into the tanks, the wharf will bo of the skeleton type; that is, it will bo only partially decked. The hardwood timber to be used for the new wharf has been arriving at Lyttelton for the last few months, and has been stacked on tho site near the wharf.
