STOCK IN QUARANTINE

CHARGES FOR TRANSPORT OBJECTION TO SCALE "It is a proper scandal," said Mr. S. Austin Carr, president of the Auckland Agricultural and —oration, when the scale of ciiarges for transporting stock to and from the quarantine area at Motuihi Island was discussed yesterday at a meeting of the council of the association.

Mr. Carr said tho return cost for a sheep or a pig was £4, while tho charge for a dog was £2. Ho considered the charges wcro too great, especially when tho return fare for a human being visiting tho island was only Is Gd. The association had made representations on tho matter to the Agricultural Department, but tho reply was that the department could not do anything. Ho still thought strenuous steps should be taken to secure moderation in the charges. A communication on tho subject has been received by the association from the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand. The letter stated that inquiries showed that the shipping charges to Motuihi Island had been gazetted, and the payments wore carefully scrutinised by the Treasury to ensure that tho Gazette regulations wero complied with. The secretary, of the society, Mr. J. Pow, had interviewed the director of "tho live stock division, and had been informed that there would be little chance of a reduction, as the present scale of charges did not pay.
