THE TROTTING CUP

PROGRESS OF LOCAL HORSES JEWEL POINTER IN FORM CONDITION OF PETER PIRATE BY ABAYDOS With the race for the Auckland.Trotting Cup only a week off keener interest is being taken in the work and condition of the six local candidates, Auto Machine, Peter Pirate, Kewpie's Triumph, Great Parrish, Jewel Pointer and Pegaway. While the lastnamed is the most fancied of them and threatens to dispute favouritism with the visitor Indianapolis, the latest track work of the Epsom and Otahuhu representatives gives food for serious thought regarding their prospects. Good judges at Otahuhu state emphatically that Jewel Pointer is working just as well as ever, and when he recently ran a mile and a-half in 3.15, and on Sunday improved on this by nearly three seconds, his connections were well pleased. Retired on more than one occasion, he came back to the active list and entered into his work with as much energy as of yore, and although lie will find some of his younger rivals difficult to beat at a range of 48yds. it will not occasion very great surprise if i>e gains a share of the prize-money. Of the Epsom candidates Peter Pirate has been responsible for the best two miles efforts, and the solidnesa of his work has been ft feature of training operations. Although partial to tracks the footing of which is easy, Peter Pirato is standing up to his work on the hard tracks in n -manner that indicates he is thoroughly sound. He appears to be better now than when he ran a very creditable third in last year's cup. and if the grass tra ;k 13 in the some order as it was then he should improve on the 4.23 4-5 he recorded on that occasion. Auto Machine's Work Prior to last Saturday Auto Machine's tasks over the cup distance were not very exacting, but when asked for speed in the final stages he showed all his former brilliance. A. Brown set cut to make him run a 4.30 trial, aud he judged it right to the tick. Auto Machine did his work particularly well and again displayed a rare turn of speed at the end. He should derive benefit from the run and with n few more sound tasks should be in readiness for his engagement. Kewpie's Triumph has been accomplishing very useful work without doing anything special in the way of fast time, but as he is not a showy track horse, this does not tend to discount his prospects. With J. Bryce behind him he was givcji a really solid work-out on Saturday and in running 4.32 for two mil as demonstrated that he is not far off his best form again. Bryce said he was well pleased with Kewpie's Triumph's condition at this stage and expects to see him improved with two or three more rousing efforts. J. T. Paul is taking Great Parrish along steadily and tho horse appears to have derived a good deal of benefit from a short let-up after the Auckland spring meeting, at which he failed to show his best form. Great Parrish won the Auckland Trotting Cup last year in the manner of a good horse and his success came as a surprise, as it was known that lie was produced on a light preparation. As he had raced frequently in the South Island prior to returning to Mangere, the treatment was evidently suitable, and a similar policy having been adopted this year he may again make a bold bid for victory. Pegaway in Fine Order Pegaway's preparation has been of the solid order and his progress has pleased his trainer, F. J. Smith. Since racing at the spring meetin.; Pegaway has thickened out and bears a more muscular appearance, while he has been working much more attractively over two .miles. He looks a typical cup horse' and should strip in great order. Although he has not gone faster than his handicap, 4.30, the style in which he has .won has left the impression that he could make an appreciable reduction on his beat time. Little is known about the progress of Enawah, trained .at Tamahere .by W, Hughes. The fact that she was left in ths tup in preference to First Blight indicates I that alio has gone along in the right way, and she requires only to to the ! very fine form she displayed in the winter to add further interest to the race. Enawah has performed with credit at two miles on both firm and holding traoks. and is ft brilliant pacer with a reasonable chance of success. Brown- some anxiety for a few days. M Pipe is to ride him at !New Plymouth, where he should prove hard to beat. Pine rode a capital race on Don Erma at Waverley. , , , - The firm state of the ground has prevented J: Fryer from jumping March Alone •lately but he is to school this week. March Alone's-proposed visit to Ellerßlie for the hurdle races on the later days will depend upon his running at New Plymouth. Havering who was recommended for the schooling-list, has been given another chance Be is in fine order and a race like the Stratford Cup should suit him admirably.
