NATHAN & CO® LTD. lias kept in step with the progress Auckland since the earliest days of colonisation and now stands pre* eminently in the foreground as one of the commercial landmarks of the city. The founder of the firm commenced business in Kororareka (Russell) in 1838. When the township was sacked by the Maoris under Hone Heke he moved to Auckland with the first survey party in 1 840 and purchased the site marked X in the above illustration. X X 1858 In 1858 the original building was replaced by one built of English bricks. In 1910 extensive additions were made to these premises. Thirty-two years ago the Bond and Tea Blending Warehouse was erected. Established in 1838 L. D. Nathan & Co. Ltd. is the oldest mercantile concern in the Dominion. A contsantly expanding business, however, necessitated Ihe acquisition of a more commodious site, and that of Auckland s first Custom House (marked XX on illustration) was purchased. Upon this was erected the present building of ferroconcrete and brick, providing nearly three acres of floor space, of which the office accommodation occupies approximately a quarter-of-an-arre. The most modern appliances for expeditious handling of goods were also installed throughout.
