CHARGE OF THEFT
ACCUSED ON PROBATION TWO WEEKS* IMPRISONMENT Charged with stealing a pair of curtains, a sauc.-cpan and an umbrella, valued at £1 lis Gd, at Napier in March, 1931, a fireman, James Williams, aged 38, appeared in (he Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.
The probation officer, Mr. \V. J. Campbell, said accused was placed on probation in 1931. He was now lacing llie original charge. He had been ordered to make restitution totalling but had paid only £l. He had failed to report and had since been in prison. Mr. Noble, who represented accused, said his client believed his probation had expired after his term in prison. Probation appeared to be like the old man of the sea, once a man had it on his hack it stayed there. Accused, who
called himself (ho "aro of scissors grinders," could get considerable work in mowing lawns.
"The lawns will keep on growing for a couple of weeks," said the magistrate in sentencing accused to 14 days' imprisonment.
