BEEF FOR BRITAIN
STOCKS HELD IN GISBORNE QUOTA SYSTEM DIFFICULTIES [by telegraph—OWN* correspondent] GISBORNE, Friday Difficulties in disposing of beef held in the Dominion under the quota system imposed by Great Britain last year are referred to by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, in a letter to the Poverty Bay Sheepowners' Union. At present there are about 18,000 quarters of last season's beef still in store in Gisborne, and with the recommencement of killing operations, the federation was anxious to ascertain the prospects of clearing the r^cumulation. The board, in its letter, expresses its hostility to the principle of quotas, but explains that tho situation existing in England last season made it clear that nothing but harm could result from sending more supplies forward. For this reason it was agreed to spread the shipments during the flush period, and under this arrangement it is proposed that stocks held in Gisborne and other centres should be sent forward. It is expected that the last of the Gisborne surplus will be cleared by the end of January.
