CANTERBURY PIONEER
REWARD OF HARD WORK In " The Autobiography of an Early Settler '' .Mr. Edgar Jones of Otiritiri, 'J'iniaru, has written his story of pioneering in the South Island. All runholders know the remarkable success which .Mr. Jones made of his large sheep stations; and his book has been published as an incentive to young New Zcalanders to do equally well. He tells, racily nnd interestingly, of his first errors, when he had a thousand pounds at his disposal; describes the misfortune which left liini, after years of work, without, anything. lie had to start all over again, this time without capital; but work and will-power gave in time their reward. The last station which Mr. Jones owned was " MountThis was acquired by the Land Purchase Board and cut up into thirteen holdings, all of which have been successfully farmed. The author gives very sound advice to young men, basing this upon his own experiences. He is of opinion that there are still competencies to be made out of rural life if people are content to work and to practise a certain amount of self-denial. His book is an interesting addition to the list of pioneering rem i n iscences.
