SEA-SICK STOWAWAYS
Stating that the men were "clearly the victims of circumstances," the Woolwich magistrate discharged, under the Probation Act, Robert Edward Walker, aged 30, of West Hartlepool, and Richard Storey, agerl 22, of South Shields, who were charged with stowing away in the steariier City of Vancouver, from Australia. The men constructed " dug-outs" with bags of grain, but were so seasick during a violent storm that they left their hiding-place. They had not been in trouble before they went to Australia under a Government work scheme. Walkei had tramped all over the country in search of, work, but had found nothing except casual employment. Storey was unable to secure work, and was on the point of starvation when he decided to stow away.
