RELIEF WORKERS CHARGED FINES ON THREE MEN Charges of making a false statement to the Unemployment .Hoard for the purpose of obtaining benefit were preferred in the Magistrate's Court yesterday against Albert Sullivan, aged 45, driver (Mr. Allan Moody), William MeCabe, motor-driver, and William James Britton, an ex-naval petty officer. All pleaded guilty. An inquiry officer for the Unemployment Board, Mr. J. L. Browne, trave evidence that on June 12 Sullivan filled in an application form for relief work and falsely stated that threo of his children were not earning money. As a result of this deception lie obtained £5 to which he was not entitled. McCabe was prosecuted because he did not accurately state his total earnings over a period of six months, and Britton was proceeded against for falsely stating his wife was living with him and was dependent upon him. Neither of these defendants had benefited to any extent by their deception. "I suppose we cannot stop this sort of thing?" said the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt. Mr. Browne: It seems to be on the increase.

Sullivan was fined £2 and costs and was ordered to make £o restitution, while the other defendants were each fined £2 and costs. All were allowed a work in which to pav. The magistrate said that if ofi'ences of this nature continued, it misjht bo necessary to increase the fines.
