DAIRY MARKETING

PROPOSED REGULATIONS

j VIEWS OF THE INDUSTRY SUGGESTIONS FOR DEBATE A proposal by which the vic-irs of those engaged in the dairy industry on the proposed dairy marketing regulations might be obtained was made yesterday by 51 r. W. E. Lewisbam, a dairy produce exporter. Referring. to a statement by Mr. D\ne? Fufton, a member or the Dairy . Produce Board, in which he suggested I that some of the agents who were j travelling about the country advising ] farmers to market their own produce { fchou'd call a meeting in a farming centre, put their case and give the 1 farmer the right to ask some questions i on the methods now in existence, Mr. ] Lewisham said he would accept the sugI pestion so lightly made. He would make | further suggestions which he was sure • Mr. Fulton, having the interests of the ! industry at heart, would accept. j Mr. Lewishain added: "The addi- ■ ilocal suggestions I have to make are jas follows:—That the meeting in ques- { lion be held at Morrinsville on a date j to be agreed upon, not later than i November 20: that only directors and j secretaries of dairy companies be in { attendance: that a debate take place, i the subject being: 'That the marketing ! proposals are not in the best interests ' of the producers of New Zealand.' "I will take the affirmative and Mr. | Fulton the negative. At least one week | before the meeting Mr. Fulton is to | furnish me with the proposals for which j the Dairy Board will seek the necessary legislation. The proposals of which : 1 have a copy are those of September • 22. No vote is to be taken at the rneet- ; ing, the purpose of the debate being ! to ventilate the subject for the benefit ; of the Dominion, the meeting to be ! open to the press, arfd the appointment ; of chairman to be by mutual arrangement. Such a debate in such surroundi ings will surely clarify the position to the satisfaction of the industry, which is naturally the party most concerned." ]
