ENGLAND AND WALES SOLID LABOUR GAINS INCOMPLETE RETURNS By Tolcjrraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received November 2, 5.45 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 1 Municipal elections are being held in jnoro than 300 rities and boroughs in England and Wales to replace onethird of the councils. Results to hand so far show the position to he as follows: Gains Losses Labour . . . . 180 5 Conservatives . « (5 112 Liberals .... 5 3'! Independents . . 10 51 Labour so far, however, has only secured control in Barnsley, Wallst-nd, Swansea, and Oldham. In tho lastnamed Labour gained five seats from tho Conservatives and two from the Liberals. There were considerable gains of seats in Burnley, Dor by, Bolton, Sunderland,Salford and Bootle. Those defeated in Manchester include Lady Simon and Lord Stanley of Aiderlev (Liberals). ,Mr. Herbert Smith, miners' leader, was defeated in Barnsley. Labour regained control of Sheffield, which it lost last year. NEWSPAPER COMMENT THE SWING TO LABOUR STRONGER THAN EXPECTED (Received November 3'. 32.15 G.m.) LONDON. Nov. 2 The Manchester Guardian says the swing to Labour in the municipal elections was stronger than was anticipated. It Mas especially marked in Yorkshire and the north-east. This confirms tho view that the Labour victory in East Fulham recently was no Hash in the pan. Tho Daily Herald says the electors have struck a blow for better housing and social services.
