DOMINION WIRELESS
WAVE-LENGTH CHANGES ADVANTAGE TO LISTENERS Changes in the wave-lengths of 21 of the 36 broadcasting: stations in the Dominion will be made on December 1. Two others, 3YA, Christchureh, and 2Z.1, Gisborne, will be altered when the new 3YA transmitter at Banks Peninsula is brought into operation a week or so later. After investigations extending over months, the new wave-lengths have been decided upon, having regard to those of overseas stations which are received in the Dominion, and the alterations should prove of advantage to listeners. The wave-lengths are governed iinally by international action. The frequency of the four New Zealand YA stations, except 4YA, Dunedin, lias been decreased, giving a longer wave-length; it has been proved that low-frequency stations have a better coverage than those of high frequency. Moreover, as the wave-length is increased, the band where fading and distortion occur is removed further from the station, and thus a greater number of New Zealand listeners receives an efficient service. Under the new arrangement the wave-length of 2YA, "Wellington, will be increased by 100.6 metres to 526. which will be the highest in the Dominion. Station IYA, Auckland, will be advanced by 91.7 metres to 461.3. and 3YA by 56.1 to 416.4. Although the wave-length of 4YA, Dunedin, is being reduced from 461.3, lYA's new wavelength, to 370.5, it is still fairly high. Iho three Auckland B class stations IZM, IZR and IZS will be unchanged, but IZB and IZ.I Mill bo increased slightly. Station IZU, Hamilton, will be reduced from 479.5 to 389.4.
