OVERDUE RATES

SUM OF ABOUT £3,000,000 BIG NEW SOUTH WALES TOTAL A total of about .£3,000,000 is owing to municipalities and shires in New South Wales in overdue rates. One council in the Sydney metropolitan area is owed about £70.000. That, however, is not the worst feature of the trouble. Property-owners and the councils do not see how the situation may be remedied. The property-owners say that they cannot make up arrears while councils rate them on high values which no longer prevail. A correspondent says:—"Persons owning numbers of properties, suburban allotments, or subdivisions not yet offered, and so forth, cannot sell part of their holdings and pay the rates with the money thus obtained, because thcro is no demand. Allotments arc very low in price and are hard to sell, even singly, so the offering of a number would simply mean a lamentable sacrifice which would not relieve the situation. "If councils reduced their valuations they would not be able to carry on, and property-owners say that if they do not reduce tl\em much land will be thrown on the councils because of the inability of the owners to pay accumulated rates.',' _— —— DON'T NEGLECT A Common Case of Piles. It May Lead to Serious Results When people, generally, understand that all such fatal diseases as Fistula, IJlccr of the Rectum Fissure, etc. almost invariably begin in a simple case of Piles, they will learn the wisdom of taking prompt treatment for the first appearance of this trouble. Doan s Ointment is unequalled for every form of piles—bleeding, itching, protruding and blind piles, and hundreds of lives have been saved by using this cheap but effective remedy right at the start, because at such times a single pot lias often effected a cure, while in the old, deep-seated chronic cases several pots are sometimes necessary. Hero is a case: Mrs. W. Codings, 15 Elizabeth Street, Mount Eden, Auckland, says: " A member of my family is a great believer in Doan's Ointment and always keeps a pot of this splendid remedy in the house. Some lime ago he was suffering very much with piles, the irritation being often almost unbearable. He used many advertised cures, but until he applied Doan's Oinfment nothing seemed to give him any relief. A friend suggested to him to try Doan's Ointment so ho bought a pot and used it with most beneficial resulfs. It gave him ease almost at once, and beforo long the piles had completely disappeared. He is never troubled with the complaint now, but likes to havo Doan's Ointment handy in case the trying irritation should return at any.time." Ton years later Mrs. Collins says; "The member of my family who was cured of piles by Doan's Ointment is still free from this trying complaint." Doan's Ointment is sold by all chemists and storekeepers. Foster-McClellan Co., Proprietors, 15, Hamilton Street, Sydney. But, be sure you get DOAN'S.— (Advt.)
