ENCOURAGING TENNIS
OFFER OF NORMAN BROOKES Mr. Norman Brookes, president of the Australian and Victorian Lawn Tennis , Associations, and an old boy oFthe Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, has offered to donate a valuable cup for competition among the Victorian boys' public schools. This is a step in the direction of reviving the enthusiasm which once made the public school boys' championship one of the best events ever played in Victoria, gays a Melbourne writer. It is also an endeavour to resuscitate an event which has been in abeyance since 1925 because the schools cannot find time for tennis in the sports programme. The idea behind Mr. Brookes' offer is, however, not for an individual event, but for teams from the schools.
Among the names of previous winners of the public school boys' championship inscribed on the honours board at :Kooyong appear Jirtliur and Pat O'Hara-Wood, G. L. Patterson, J. ,0. Anderson, J. B. Hawkes, B. and' A. Dunlop (sons of the famous late partner of Brookes in doubles) and other players who have done their bit for Victoria and Australia —some of them in Davis Cup matches.
