RICCARTON TRAINING

i 1 ASHBURTON CANDIDATES ! WORK ON HEAVY TRACK ;• - ' r 111 . THE RIDING ENGAGEMENTS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Conditions were not favourable for training operations at Riccarton to-day, a cold southerly wind, accompanied by driving showers, making matters unpleasant for all concerned. The tracks received a good soaking. but peculiarly enough the times for the early gallops on the No. 1 track were hardly aflectod. As the surface became cut up, however. and the wind increased, the figure suffered very much in comparison. ; The morning's work, from n time point of view, was therefore of little value in anticipation of the Ashburton programme on Saturday, as no comparison could be drawn between the first few horses galloped and those worked half an. hour after proceedings opened. Copyist ran from the mile to the halfmile post in 50 2-ss. Much interest will centre in his effort at Ashburton as, apart from making his first appearance in public, he is to represent the Chokebore stable in the Wanganui Guineas next week. Cricket Bat strode over seven furlongs in 1.30 .2-5, the first three in 37 2-ss. Cricket Bat is exceptionally well just now and, in spite of his weight, should contest the finish of the Ashburton Handicap. Rebol Song ran half a mile along the back in 49 2-ss. He may not bo as well seasoned - as some of his opponents .at Ashbr.iton, but on his recent gallops will have to be seriously considered. Grecian Prince and Helen Gold galloped half a milu home in 50s, the latter holding an advautage throughout the run homo and finishing half a length in front of her companion, who, however, carried a much bigger weight. J. W. Jennings, who suffered a fall from Grecian Prince on the first day of the Grand National gathering, will ride the guiding again on Saturday. Heather Glow followed over the. same giound in 50 4-ss. Drum Fire was hold in restraint in covering half a mile in 62 2-ss. and Fleeting Glance finished in front of iSiggerhead at the end of a similar task in 52 3-ss.

Nightly and Bright Red strode over six furlongs in 1.19, and Fiat Lux finished well clear of St. Joan, after taking 1.35 for seven furlongs, tho last half in 65 3-as. Sweet Agnes and Errantry ran the first two furlongs of a six-furlong gallop, in ].25 2-5, but took .1.22 for tho full journey, tho filly finishing in front. _

Shatter and Bamo wero companions in a milo task. Tho first half was covered in 51 2-5, but tho pair OccupieJ 60s for 'the last half, Ramo maintaining a half-length advantage over tho last furlong to the post. Munetho strode over half a milo in 54 3-5s and Bright Shade and' SJsy Lass took 55a. Hurlingham broke away, in front of Koyul Amphora and beat him' home comfortably after recording 54s for four furlongs. Chief Light and Strong Light are being kept in easy work by E. Scoullar. but it is noi intended to race them . again until November, . One of the most attractive two-year-olds seen out at Riccarton this season is the filly by ■ Martarmar from , Rawene. The youngster is very solidly built and resembles her sire more than any of his previous progeny. She was bred by Mr. J. Porter, and on present appearances is likely to carry his colours with distinction. Riding engagements for Saturday's racing at Ashburton ai;e as follows:—G. Humphries. Hurlingham.
