STUDENT COMIC OPERA

"PIRATES 'OF PENZANCE" | An excellent performance of " The Pirates of Penzance," one of the most delightful of tho Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, was given by the Auckland Teachers' Training College musical society before a large audience at tho Scots Hall last evening. It was a personal triumph for Miss Nancy Hickling. Her beautifully modulated soprano voice imparted a new freshness to her songs. Then there was tho fine robust singing of Hoy Lowndes, as "the very model of a modern majorgeneral," and tho clover miming of Jack liimmer, whoso study of the ser-. geant of police was a gem of comedy. As Frederic the pirate apprentice, Ken Potter made a picturesque figure. Arthur Budd was a suitably sinister pirate king and lent frequent touches of comedy. Ruth the pirate maid-of-all-work was well played by Miss Jeanie Howard and equally appealing performances were contributed by Miss Glenys Cartwright, Natalie Williams and Shirley Roberts, other daughters of the MajorGeneral. Frank Ness appeared as Samuel, th<J pirate lieutenant, and Ron. Riddolls as .tho pirate James. Then there was a splendid chorus —the pathetic policemen the picturesque pirates and the innumerable daughters of the Major-General. " The Pirates of Penzance " will be repeated this evening. -
