NOTES ON THE RUNNING " MISHAPS IN CUP EVENT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday "■ Although eho made one or two faulty jumps, Ngareta stayed t<?o solidly for liei opponents in the Maiden. Steeples, and won comfortably. Michael Shimose was in front over the middle stages, but did not stay, Hauwai did not put any dash into hie jumping and was never dangerous. No Doubt won the Opunake Scurry like a good three-year-old. He jumped oul smartly and was soon in front with Matorni, whom he had no difficulty in shaking off in the straight, going on to win nicely. Taitoru was always handy, but had no chance with the pinner. Bold Bid was unlucky and, with a better run in the straight, would have troubled the winner. Diversion, was well placed about third or fourth all the way, but weakened at the finish. Round Table, a brother to High Falutin', made up a lot of ground over the last three furlongs, and finished sixth. Carfex, who began very smartly, won the Stratford Handicap by a nose in a splendid finish with Merry Way, who. had acted as pacemaker. Cereal was a good third, Glenvane, who . become - through Cereal coming over on "Turn at the etraight entrance, being next. Carfex won reallj well and looks an improved horse. The Hunt Cup was a chapter of accidents, only Winnagan and Shamin completing the course without mishap. Winnagan was in front from start to finish. Don Erma went with him for half a mile, but then fell, Mataro ran off just before commencing the final circuit, but was taken back and completed the course to get third. After lying in third place on the rails until the etraight was reached, St. Clara came along with a fine run and won the Waihi Hack Handicap in convincing style, Silk Socks endeavoured to win all the way, but weakened over the last 100 yards, lit Crown was Silk Socks' nearest attendant moat of the way, but failed t? run on, Glowlight and March Alone were in the rear all the way, although they were close up at the finish. Lucky Alice scored nicely in the Members' Handicap. After being in front from the rise of the barrier, she was clear oi Richfield at the home turn, and went or to win by half a length from Glowlight, who finished fast to beat Little Dpubt or the post. Richfield was a good fourth. The Hiker was a hot favourite for the Hunters' Flat, but could only finish third He did not have a very good run, but could not have beaten the winner. Count Lendroff who, well handled by B. H. Morris, woe decisively. After being nicely placed ovej the last half-mile, Arikitea weni' to_ the front six furlongs from'home, and only just failec to see the journey out. After being last away, Headmistress woe the Urenui Handicap in convincing fashion She took charge at the distance, and scorec with a lot in hand. Cereal was last three furlongs from the post, but finished solidly, Diversion was the leader until the etraight was reached, and hung on well to get third Bold Bid was a good fourth. JUDY KELLY'S ESCAPADE HEAVY FALL ON TRACK The three-year-old filly Judy Kelly, bj Kilbroney from Joy Queen, had a luckj escape from injury at Ellerelie on Saturday. She threw her rider while working and when careering back toward the crossing attempted to jump over the fenct on the inside of the No. 1 grass. She tool off from the tan track, which is below the level of the grass, giving her a jump ol about 6ft, which proved too much, and ahe fell heavily.
