BURGLAR'S ESCAPE

CHASED BY POLICE STOLEN JEWELLERY DROPPED An expert '"cat" burglar blew open a safe in the premises of Stevenson Brothers, jewellers, in Adelaide, early one morning recently, and seized £I4OO worth of jewellery. Later the man was discovered on the roof by the nightwatchman at the Myer Emporium, , whose premises adjoin, and although pursued by the police, he escaped by dropping 25ft. into a parking ground, crossing North Terrace, and disappearing in Government House grounds. So intense was the chase that on the parking area next to the Shell Building on North Terrace, the burglar dropped three sugar bags containing the total proceeds of the robbery. Some of th 6 jewellery was damaged as a result of having been hurriedly dropped. The police also found a canvas shoe, a glove and a kit of burglar's tools. The thief entered the building by cutting a hole in the roof. He evidently took his time, because the police found a copy df a newspaper and the remains of a meal. The door of the safe was blown across the room, a distance of 20ft., and a piece of metal penetrated a plate-glass window. When the nightwatchman flashed his torch on the burglar on the roof he said, "Don't move; I have a gun." The nightwatchman, seeing the man disappear, rushed below to telephone the police. A car with detectives arrived from the watchliouse, and on the way picked up all the available men on the beat, arriving at the scene with 20 constables, who surrounded the block in which Stevenson's premises are situated. 1 hen word was received that a bicycle paitrol on North Terrace had seen the man cross that thoroughfare and dash through the gates of Government House. A cordon of police was thrown round the grounds, which were thoroughly searched, but the robber was not found.
