EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the Nkw Zealand Hkrald of August 27* 1883: A telegram from Christchurch states that a meeting of the unemployed was held in Cathedral Square yesterday, morning. About 200 were present. Several speeches were made pointing out the shortness of work, and blaming the Governments for importing rolling stock for the railways instead of having it made in New Zealand. It was decided *o send a memorial detailing their grievances to Sir George Grey. The railway revenue for the past four months amounts to £330,000, or about the same as the corresponding period of last year. The expenditure is £220,000. The Auckland, Wellington and Napier lines showed an increase in profit. A correspondent states that an " anti-shouting army " is being urged In one of the Southern towns, the members being distinguished by the wearing of a white ribbon. "Surely this could be followed in Auckland," he writes, ' fo r there is need here of a society whose only rule would be 'No member to accept liquor in any public house at •the expense of anybody else.' " A cablegram, dated August 25, states that the prorogation of Parliament took place in London. The Speech the Throne stated that the scheme to the reorganisation in Egypt was stea - ily advancing, and that the harmony of Britain's diplomatic relations " foreign Powers remained unchanged.
