THE FLOWER GARDEN Now U a good time to increase hardy perennial* by division, if not already attended to. Plant more gladioli for succeuional bloom. Rock gardens should receive attention. The soil in the pockets should be pricked over and winter losses replaced. Many rock garden subjects will benefit with a topdressing of a gritty compost. Sow under glass asters, marigolds, carnations, lobelia, phlox Drummondii, scabiosa, schizanthiis, etc. Prick off seedlings as they become ready. Plant out stocks, cineraria, nemesis, Iceland poppies, panlies and violas. Keep the ground stirred between plants in beds and borders. Narcissus' coming into flower must be watched for slugs and snails. .Renovate patchy lawnr by sowing more seed on a >! \ sprinkling of rich soil brushed well, into the old WClean lip all paths of weeds and overgrown edges. Complete the planting of hedges this month.

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN Sow asparagus, broad beans, cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce. Plant out cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce. Earth-up potatoes and peas that are showing above ground. Sow more early carrots and turnips. Dig-in green manuring crops to allow time or decomposition before planting is commenced. Choose fine days for breaking up ground that has been rough dug for the winter. On volcanic land every opportunity should be taken for planting and sowing before dry conditions prevail. Now is the best time to sow sea kale for next winter supply. When the sap is rising graft any fruit trees that are required. Propagate herbs by divisions or cuttings. Make a sowing of celery seed under glass. Sow more tomatoes, marrow and cucumber for succession. Early tomatoes under glass, coming into flower, should have plenty of fresh air and a drier atmosphere. Vine houses should have, a humid temperature to encourage early growth.
